What is 340B?
The 340B program allows hospitals to buy medications at deep discounts and sell them at higher rates, profiting at the expense of employers and employees. There is no assurance that these profits benefit the vulnerable patients, whom the deeply discounted meds are for. Instead, the 340B program drives up pharmacy costs for employers through steep markups, lost rebates, and PBM incentives for PBMs to encourage prescriptions for higher-cost drugs over biosimilars. In fact, in some estimations employers are losing millions of dollars through the 340B program.
Why should you care?
To raise employers' awareness of this cost-driving issue, TBGH is partnering with the National Alliance and launching an educational initiative to increase awareness and understanding of the 340B program and how it affects Texas employers, including members of DFWBGH, HBCH, SABGH, and other stakeholders and policymakers.
